Camping close to Lowe's Motor Speedway
All around Charlotte Motor Speedway are Pop Odoms camping the fans in their yards. There are many streets that are residential streets that surround Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The entrepreneur spirit is alive & well at Charlotte. People ride thru the camping areas selling ice, newspapers, steaks, ice cream, chicken, pizza, septic services, fire wood & whatever else they can to help the fans & earn a buck.
HUDSPETH ROAD CAMPING & PARKING:
Hudspeth Road is off Hwy. 29/Concord Parkway and wraps around to Morehead.
Hudspeth Road is right next to the Shell on Hwy. 29/Concord Parkway.
Hudspeth's First Turn Camp Ground & Parking - WEBSITE
"The Official Charlotte Campground of Laidback Racing"
6600 Hudspeth Road. Hook ups and dry camping, tents welcome. Call Stephanie @ 704-455-7867 for reservations. (This is Speedway Self Storage and leave Steph a message & she will call you back if she is not in the office). She now has the on line forms up so check it out! HUDSPETH'S TURN ONE CAMPGROUND AND PARKING Dogs allowed on a leash. ATV's Golf Carts, Motorcycles, Dirt Bikes and Scooters with a permit from First Turn. Ice for sale and HOT Showers free with camping. The Showers at Hudspeth's Turn 1 Campground are the hottest showers I have ever used! The hot water did not run out all weekend! I don't even bother using the shower in my RV.
The Hudspeth sold part of their property that is where they used to camp folks on the left hand side of the road. Camping is now on the right hand side of the road. There will be some one at the entrance and if not they come thru every morning to collect money. In my opinion it is a nicer field. It is flatter and more grass. Not near as much plain dirt and definately not as hilly. There is unlimited unreserved camping available at Turn 1 Campground. THEY WILL NOT RUN OUT OF UNRESERVED CAMPING....The Hudspeth's own as much land as the speedway!
GREEN FLAG FROM US: The Hudspeth family are some of the best campground owners I have ever camped with in 20 years of chasin' racin'.....they look out for the fans and enjoy the race weeks as much as we do.
PLEASE TELL THE HUDSPETHS YOU READ ABOUT THE CAMPGROUND ON LAIDBACKRACING.COM
There is also camping across the street from Darrell's old shop/Haas Racing
UPDATE From Jeff T.: I've been on the opposite side for 7 or 8 years now. They have a good number of porta john's there that are cleaned daily. There are some water hookups but nothing else.
To the left of Haas Motorsports was camping also. I didn't see a sign but there was hookups and dry camping. Also parking.
DP's Camping and Parking - First come First serve. As you turn onto Hudspeth the tree line from Preferred Parking and camping is on your left. On the right there is Race Day parking (shaded and port o potties) corner of Hudspeth and Hwy 29/Concord Parkway. You will come down Hudspeth and see a white metal building with red awnings. The road will have the yellow signs with black arrows that stand for a sharp left hand bend in the road. DP is on the right. You can't miss his place. The campers are right up to the road.
GREEN FLAG FROM US: Great place to camp. Cut across the street and you will be in Preferred Parking and the track is across the street. Small but inexpensive. Water & port o potties available
Next door to DP's house around 6855 Hudspeth Road is another camping area. RV sites Electric, Water, Sewer 704-455-5010
Checkered Flag Camping 6915 Hudspeth Road no phone number
SHELL STATION/First Turn Express has parking for $20.00 a day. Get there early and go around the back there is shade and a grassy area. 704-455-5686 5945 Concord Pkwy S Concord, NC
MOOREHEAD RD. CAMPING & PARKING ACROSS FROM SOUTH TURN GRANSTANDS:
Across the street from the track on Moorehead behinds turn 2 is Yates Family Camping 704-773-9349. They are on the corner of Moorehead Road and Hudspeth. Tell Raoul you found them here
Red Barn Campground in 7/10th's of a mile past the speedway. It's $85 dollars to camp there. They have a quiet section for families, and now they have the party section. Across the street from Moorehead Farms so you can walk across the street and take the shuttle.
CAMPING AND PARKING ACROSS FROM THE TRACK BEHIND THE AMOCO:
RANDY AND EMILY LITTLE'S CAMPING AND PARKING: We hooked into a place we really liked & stayed there until the 2004 fall race. It is the first entrance on the left past the Amoco on Morehead at the bottom of the hill. The only reason we moved is because golf carts aren't encouraged on the property in front of theirs and it is too hard to scoot around in the Little Brown Truck. Randy and Emily's is still one of the best places to camp just not for us. Tell'em hey there from Laidback Racing. We have gotten there at all hours of the weekend and never have a problem finding a spot.
Tell Randy & Emily Laidback Racing sent you!
LAIDBACK RACING TIP: Get up at the top of the hill and then cut across the lot in front of you to head to the track's frontstretch or turn 1.
Randy, Tim and Shari little also own Ted Little's MHP a small RV park with full hookups. Water, electric (30 and 50 AMP), sewer and garbage pickup. They are currently taking reservations for the October race. Call Shari at 704 262 7857 or 704-425-4359 and ask for Randy.
Please tell Randy and Shari you read about it here!
Across the street from the track on Moorehead down from the Amoco on both sides are Pop Odom camping. Please Note: Moorehead becomes Mallard Creek almost immediately. Off Moorehead/Mallard Creek on Everette, Fenton, Aarick, Amy, Mobil Trail, Deltrae Circle, Friskie, Annette and other little side streets are camping. Some have hookups some don't. (See first map & second map). These are good spots if you have seats on the frontstretch or Turn 1.
Prices are from $5 to $20 for parking, $75.00 and up for camping. We have never had reservations but have always camped within a block of the track.
.85 Apollo Campground, 704-455-2409 UPDATE FROM JAY W.: tent camping and parking and they take reservations
SPEEDWAY BLVD. CAMPING:
Ver-El Camping & Parking 5650 Sandusky Blvd Concord NC 1-800-560-6047 THIS IS WHERE ALL THE INDEPENDENT VENDORS ARE LOCATED. Directly across from Main entrance, you almost miss the road.
FROM TIM: Price given over phone ($60 per night/3 night min.)not the same as price they were charging ($300 flat) for October race...Tim found these folks rude to do business with.
FROM THERESA: ...The staff at Ver-el are very professional and pleasant...just wanted to let you know that I have been doing business with them for over 17 years and have never been rude to.

Located off Speedway Blvd. (Exit 49). A short walk away from the front stretch Of America's premier race place, Lowe's Motor Speedway. A short ride from Concord Mills and the Rocky River Golf Club. Standard and pull-through Sites available. Every site equipped with cable, electricity (30-50 amp), sewer, Water hookups and picnic tables. Ultra-modern restroom and shower facilities.
HIGHWAY 29 CAMPING AND PARKING:
On the corner of Hudspeth and Highway 29/Concord Parkway is a house that parks fans. Nice shaded yard with Pot O Potties.
2808 Highway 29/Concord Parkway no number listed. Camping and parking no hookups that I saw
Pitts School Road
Outside of Turn 4 on the same side of the road as the track is Pitts School Road. I have been told there are businesses that are closed during the race where you can park and walk to the track by cutting across the speedway camping (brings you outside of turn 3). You have an easy way out to Hwy 49 after the race.
Below is camping away from speedway if that is how you want to camp BUT I really recommend staying with a Pop Odom by the track to avoid the traffic.

from John Rob with the 14' 1969 Shasta: We went yesterday to get our tickets for the fall and then camping spot in the peninsula campground. Anyway no more tents except for the very back row and I mean back row and then they have a area called BFI, which is the name of the trash dump on the backstretch. This area is on the hilly road going into the dump. I know they said they are doing this because of the carbon monoxide but still they could do better for the tenter.
ROCK CITY
UPDATE From Gene B.: Stayed at the Rock City campground when we were at Charlotte in the fall. It was OK with a shuttle from the campground to the track. Of course the post race crowd leaving overwhelmed the shuttles, so they just parked and watched people walk.
Morehead Farms is located behind the track. It is on Morehead Road between Hwy. 49 and Hwy. 29. The track owns it and you can call Lowe's Motor Speedway ticket office to reserve a (704/455-3200).
GREEN FLAG FROM MIKE B: We got to Concord late Friday afternoon, just before the rain. We camped at Morehead Farms, behind Turn 2 on Morehead Road. No hook-ups, but for $50 for the weekend it was a good deal. Plenty of room, and the best part was that it was at the very end of the Tram Route, making it real easy to get back and forth to the track. Even with the rain we got Friday (which pushed the Busch race into one big old day of racing on Saturday), the paving done by SMI after the Coke 600 washout did the job.
H2O 2 YOU

Showers
Outside of turn 4 is a shower house. The last time I used it was a few years ago. I got there at 6:15AM and still had to wait around 45 minutes. It was 2 big rooms with around 12 shower heads in each. (sort like jail showers) no privacy like the old shower house that used to be on the back stretch. Also no hot water. See tip below.
UPDATE From Mike in N.C. I have a report of Showers in the Fleetwood Campground. It is available to all campers at Charlotte Motor Speedway & it has hot water too!
UPDATE From Lee: Stayed at Rock City Campground across from Tom Johnson Camping center for the Winston. Tram ran from there to the track, and also there was a shower bus to the new bathhouse behind Tom Johnson's. New showers, individual stalls, plenty of sinks, etc. Went early on the day of the Winston about 8:00AM, and I think there were about 10 people in the showers, no problem!!
LAIDBACK RACING TIP: Wear a bathing suit, ride your bike there and bring a friend to keep you company. OR construct a camp shower at your site and be happy because Charlotte can be very HOT and it sucks to take a shower and then get sweaty walking back to your camping spot. Especially after waiting for a hour or more.

Independent Vendors
Located across from the front of track on Hwy 29/Concord Parkway. The midway runs from the second row of tents parallel to Speedway Blvd to the Amoco on Morehead. The independent vendors are in the white generic tents & haulers. Great Prices & great stuff! Look for the "Everything's a Dollar tent" among others. There are many food vendors located in this area. Food is much better than average race food. They serve breakfast along with dinner foods including seafood, steaks and more! (The first row of tents are sponsor exhibit tents like Lowe's, Coleman etc. they have exhibitions & prizes.)
MRO Speedway Church Service
The area Raceway Ministries will provide outreach activities throughout the weekend at seven locations. Locations are in Vendor Row, Morehead Farms Campground, Coleman Campground, Fleetwood Campground, Peninsula, Rock City and one location in the infield.

The only time I have ever stayed at a hotel on Race weekend was for the Winston one year when my high society sister went with us. She loved the night racing but insisted that we stay at a hotel. We called on the Friday night before the All-Star race and got a motel room for 1 night for the regular rate. It was around 15 to 20 miles to speedway but no biggie. So, the hotels listed above are for rooms not in the city of Charlotte.

The only restriction is that you can't go to any porno sites. There's no problems with checking email, or going to Ebay. They said they get a lot of people there race week, so it might get a little busy.
